Finally got my drawings back--they've been hanging at S2, a video-editing company in Chicago, for the past couple of months. This is a self-portrait done from a photo taken by Ron on Valentine's Day. Upon seeing it again, I've decided it's not quite done. I'll probably tweak it a bit when I get some time. Speakin' of tweakin'--check out Brandon--I left the 'unfinished' one up along with the finished piece, so you can compare...much better, I think...

Wow, great likeness and way to pull color out of the dark that was the hair in the photo. The only thing I see is the deceptive pattern on the couch behind you, in between your arm and body. It seems to jump forward too much, like a solid object bursting through instead of a flat background design.

Other than that, fairly wicked drawing my dear. You are so good at any form of art you touch , I wish you would utilize it more.

Any suggestions about that couch? It ain't right, for sure.

The main things I'm seeing as needing work are the upper lip--looks too much like a 'got milk?' ad, the lips themselves, and the forehead area.

Brandon has a problem with the eyes. He just isn't able to say what.

I'm sure it'll all come together. I did have to stop on the drawing rather abruptly and drive it downtown during a severe thunder-lightning-mothball-sized-hail-tornado-down-south -near-Kankakee-flooding-in-the-underpasses-and all-the-streetlights-up-and-down-the-length-of -Sacramento-are-out kind of storm. Late at night. Just to make the deadline.

That's when you know a piece is done. When you run out of time.

But if you ever get a second chance with a something, it immediately becomes 'undone' again. Without fail. Time and space away always provide some clarity as to what's wrong with it. Doesn't mean you know how to fix the problems any better though. That's still always the challenge.

As in art, so in life.
Or vice versa.
I forget which. Nevermind...22 girls...leave me alone...
